The Fall 15's Southern Rugby Conference Matrix Season has finally started. The conference had some great action this weekend and will be looking to replicate on Week 2. Our biggest match of the week was between two of the SRC's premier teams, Coastal Carolina and Furman. Coastal took down Furman in a hard-fought battle that took 70 minutes to pull away in. Both teams played very physical and high-pressure defense causing each team to miss out on multiple scoring opportunities. Coastal will look forward to an immediate bye week while Furman travels to the College of Charleston to get back on track.
The Palmetto Division only had one other match due to an early-season forfeiture from Lander University after they had sustained multiple injuries and couldn't field a team. UNC-Wilmington hosted the Citadel and was able to please fans with a 38-10 win even in adverse conditions. The Citadel played hard as always, but wasn't able to overcome the talent lead by the UNCW pack. UNCW will have a bye during Week 2 while the Citadel will travel to Lander.
In the Dogwood Division, East Carolina took on Appalachian State this weekend and came out with a 36-5 win. ECU had their way with scrums and proved to have no weakness in their back-line who put in 5 tries by 3 different players. ECU will enjoy a bye after their big win. UNC - Greensboro took care of West Carolina University with a 43-12 win. Coach Wurl was able to get in all of his subs to make for a good day of rugby. West Carolina will look to regroup on their bye in Week 2. UNC-G will look to continue their Week 1 success against their neighbors, Elon, who lost a tight one against UNC-Charlotte 10-7, in a defensive match.
